Regina, January 2, 2020
Bridgewater Labs Canada (“BWL”) – Regina-based M1 Dev has been acquired by a leading global provider of customer software development and consulting services, Bridgewater Labs Canada (“BWL”). Addition of M1 Dev and team of experts in software development and solutions will enhance client services in Saskatchewan.
With this acquisition, Bridgewater Labs has expanded its staff, raising the global headcount to 55 employees worldwide across North America and Europe. The addition of M1 Dev builds on BWL’s commitment to the Canadian Prairies and Western Canada.
“Bridgewater Labs has seen rapid growth over the last year and significantly expanding our corporate headquarters is an essential step to support this progression,” said Stefan Radeta, CEO of Bridgewater Labs. “We are excited to join the community with other notable Saskatchewan business leaders. As Provincial technology demand is increasing, our team is poised and ready to meet these growing requirements.”
“After operating in Regina for just over a year, we know that there are many innovative companies looking to pursue some really unique technology projects but are facing the challenge of building and implementing the right software solutions” said Kirk Morrison, Partner at M1 Dev. “We look forward to working together with our new team at Bridgewater Labs to help more organizations in Saskatchewan with their technology objectives.”
The demand for custom software solutions is growing worldwide, and Canada is no exception. The growth of the Saskatchewan innovation ecosystem, coupled with the shortage of experienced developers, has led to an increasing need to contract these services to qualified teams with a global footprint. BWL brings the right combination of highly qualified developers with international experience to fill this gap and support the growing demand.
The office location will remain in Regina as part of the expansion to continue supporting the growth of the innovation ecosystem in Saskatchewan. The group works out of PATH coworking space, a robust entrepreneurial Hub, and home to several local and national companies. Over the last year, there has been interest from tech companies looking away from the traditional urban hubs like Toronto and Vancouver. As a result, places like Regina are making a name as an emerging tech city.
"Regina has all the city amenities of a great city but with a small city community vibe. There’s a real sense of balance between work and play made possible by a great cost of living and best of all – short commute times,” said Kerri Michell, Chief Brand Officer of Economic Development Regina Inc. “that quality of life is actually a big differentiator for us and is helping attract investment to the community."
Some amazing tech talent has been developed in Regina. DOT Technologies built and tested the world’s first autonomous tractor. Another example is sMedia which is the 7th fastest growing software company in Canada. Regina's first tech incubator, Conexus Cultivator launched just under a year ago and is helping grow innovative Saskatchewan companies.
