Regina’s 2030 Economic Growth Plan sets an ambitious course for the city

(Regina) Regina’s City Council has endorsed the 2020-2030 Economic Growth Plan as recommended by Economic Development Regina (EDR). The plan provides a roadmap for the GRA to thrive and to improve the lives of Reginans today and in the future. It contains 19 specific achievable actions that will drive economic growth and prosperity for years to come.

“This is an exciting time for Regina. Over the next decade, Saskatchewan’s population will grow to over 1.4 million, and Regina is in a unique position to support that growth,” EDR Director and steering committee co-chair Murad Al Katib said. “We’re on the verge of some amazing things here. Together, we have an opportunity to create new jobs and increased prosperity across our community.”

“Regina residents have long benefited from our incredibly diverse economy, which did not happen by accident,” said Mayor Michael Fougere. “This plan lays the groundwork for continued economic prosperity for the next 10 years, building on our community’s legacy of hard work and entrepreneurship. Thank you to the hundreds of residents and stakeholders who provided input and insight into the creation process.”

The plan, which originated in March 2019, is the culmination of extensive public engagement and thorough research. It was led by a steering committee of key community stakeholders (including the Board of Directors of Economic Development Regina). Over 200 residents participated in roundtables and focus groups providing important insights that helped shape the strategic direction of the plan. An online survey completed by over 1,400 Regina residents captured the thoughts of our community.

Regina’s 2030 Economic Growth Plan identifies key opportunities to increase the city’s prosperity and economic potential for the next 10 years. The aim is to promote the Greater Regina Area (GRA) as a leading destination for visitors, talent, businesses and investment. The plan identifies five key elements of a compelling vision for Regina’s future economy; competitive, vibrant, sustainable, collaborative inclusive and welcoming. It builds on the GRA’s strengths and key areas of opportunity to increase prosperity and the GRA’s economic potential.

The plan provides a blueprint for growth over the next decade while also forming the foundation for economic recovery in the near term. To that end, EDR has already advanced key actions identified in the Plan.

“The Covid related economic downturn is one like we have never previously experienced. This new economic growth plan for the next decade is a vital blueprint for restoring our economy to one of recovery and even greater future prosperity than our pre-Covid economy,” EDR Chair Frank Hart said. “It provides us with a clear path forward as we set priorities and identify opportunities for 2021 and beyond.”

Over the coming months, the City of Regina, Economic Development Regina and other key stakeholders will work together to develop a mobilization strategy to move the growth plan forward.
