March 10, 2020

The latest Statistics Canada numbers show Regina continuing to climb the charts in a variety of key categories.

Regina’s growth rate last year clocked in at 1.9%, making it the sixth fastest growing major provincial city in the country compared to centres like Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary, and Edmonton. As of July 1, 2019, Regina’s CMA population has grown to 261,684, putting it well on track to surpass 300,000 regional residence by 2040.

“We’re incredibly proud of the growth we’ve seen over the past few years,” said John Lee, CEO of Economic Development Regina. “Opportunity abounds in Regina these days as more and more people realize that we are really coming into our own as one of Canada’s great cities.”

At the same time, Regina’s growing population is also becoming much younger and more vibrant. With a median age of 35.6, Regina is the second youngest city in Canada. In comparison, the median age in Saskatoon is 35.8.

“Regina’s continuing population growth is a testament to the efforts of the City of Regina, Economic Development Regina, and our business and community partners to emphasize our strengths and diversify our economy,” said Regina Mayor Michael Fougere. “People from across Canada and around the world recognize the economic opportunity and remarkable quality of life we enjoy, and more and more are coming to share in our prosperity.”

It’s easy to see why an increasing number of young people are choosing Regina given the city’s ideal cost of living. According to Government of Saskatchewan’s 2020 budget, Regina ranks among the most affordable cities nationally. Combined with a comfortable median family income of $84,447 (third in the country), these statistics paint a picture of a city that offers an unparalleled quality of life.
