Métis Nation–saskatchewan Supports Regina’s Bid for the Canada Water Agency
The Métis Nation–Saskatchewan (MN–S) Government has lent its support to Regina’s “Team Saskatchewan” bid to become home of the new Canada Water Agency (CWA).
“On behalf of CWA Team Saskatchewan, I’m delighted to welcome Metis Nation of Saskatchewan as a supporter of our bid efforts,” Regina Mayor Sandra Masters said. “Saskatchewan’s knowledge, research and sense of community are a winning combination for the Canada Water Agency, and the support we’ve received from MN-S makes our case even stronger.”
The MN–S Ministry of Environment acquires strategic insights through both traditional knowledge and western science-based solutions to identify best practices for environmental stewardship. MN–S has been working directly with Métis citizens across the province to identify how communities are adapting and responding to climate change. This knowledge will help support the work of the Canadian Water Agency and its partners in Saskatchewan and across the country. Those insights further underline Saskatchewan’s case as the logical home for the CWA.
“The Métis Nation–Saskatchewan Government is a proud supporter of Team Saskatchewan’s bid to house the new Canadian Water Agency.” MN–S President Glen McCallum said. “Fresh water is a precious resource, and we all have a responsibility to manage it well for our future generations. This bid helps ensure the voices of Indigenous Elders and youth are heard and we are all engaged in the important work of the CWA.”
Led by Economic Development Regina, key supporters for the bid include the City of Regina, File Hills Qu’Appelle Tribal Council, MN–S and a broad range of government, academic, business and environmental organizations from across Saskatchewan.
Bid proponents say a Regina-based CWA can play a powerful role in not only water management, but also as a global leader in environmental policy and reconciliation with First Nations and Métis peoples through meaningful consultation and Indigenous inclusion and engagement.
Regina’s bid for the CWA touches on five key themes:
- Support for the Government of Canada’s environmental, Indigenous and economic agendas
- A long tradition of water stewardship, from the First People on this land, to the PFRA and well beyond
- A ground-up partnership with First Nations and Métis peoples
- A robust academic foundation in water stewardship, including First Nations University of Canada and the University of Regina, the University of Saskatchewan and SaskPolytech
- A welcoming, supportive community.
