A new chapter for edr and tourism regina as john lee announces plans to pursue new opportunities

After eight years in the position, Economic Development Regina and Tourism Regina President and CEO John Lee today announced his intention to leave the organization to explore new opportunities.

Under Lee’s leadership, EDR has established significant momentum for Regina’s economy, securing billions of dollars in business investments, fostering a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem and, together with the City of Regina, citizens and key stakeholders, developing a 10-year Economic Growth Plan for the city that will guide Regina’s continued growth for years to come.

“It’s never easy to make a move like this, but the timing is excellent – not just for me, but for the organization and the city,” Lee said. “Over the past few years, and especially during Covid, EDR has established real momentum and is well-positioned to for success now and in the future.”

Lee noted that in recent years, EDR has stepped fully into its role as a strategist and activator for Regina.

“Economic development is a team sport, and I’m very proud of the dozens of partnerships we’ve built to advance our economy on many fronts – and for many people,” Lee added. “Our Audacity YQR movement continues to gain momentum. Regina has developed a national reputation as a top-tier event city. Together with tourism stakeholders, we’re developing a long-term plan for success in that critical sector. Most recently, our partnerships with FHQ Developments, Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan and the Paul J. Hill School of Business, will help ensure that economic growth is inclusive across our community.”

Lee will remain with the organization until a successor is named. EDR’s Board of Directors has created a formal search committee and hopes to name a new CEO in late 2021/early 2022.

“John’s legacy and accomplishments are far too numerous to list in this space. However, I think it is important to make note of the enduring partnerships EDR has built in recent years under John’s leadership and the solid foundation he has built for EDR’s and Regina’s continued success. John leaves EDR in a good financial shape and with very talented and new leadership to carry on our work for Regina,” EDR Board Chair Frank Hart said. “Looking forward, John has positioned EDR very well for success. He has helped to build a solid blueprint for Regina’s future prosperity. I will miss working with him and I wish him all the best in his future pursuits.”
